Postal Test 473/473-C

Part A: Address Checking

The U.S. Postal Service has replaced the 470 Battery Test with the new Test 473/473-C, an exam for major entry-level jobs: City Carriers, Mail Processing Clerks, Mail Handlers, and Sales, Services, and Distribution Associates.

City Carriers: These carriers sort, rack, and tie mail at the post office before they start making deliveries within their route or area of delivery. They also maintain required information, record changes of address. maintain other reports, and forward undeliverable-as-addressed mail. Test 473 and 473-C are exactly the same. However, Test 473 C is for City Carriers only.

Mail Processing Clerks: These clerks operate and maintain automated mail processing equipment or do manual sorting of mail. They collate, bundle, and move processed mail from one location to another.

Mail Handlers: They load and unload mail onto and off trucks and perform duties incidental to the movement and processing of mail. Duties include separating mail sacks to go to different routes or cities; cancel parcel post stamps and operate canceling machines, addressographs, and fork-lifts.

Sales, Services, and Distribution Associates: They do direct sales and customer support services and distribution of mail. The associates must pass an on-the-job training program.

When you pass the test, you’ll be listed in the Register of Eligibles. But although 70 is the passing score, you need to score 95-100% on the exams, to have a better chance of being called for employment. Remember, those on top of the list are the ones who are called first for employment.

This Test 473 requires memorizing numbers, streets, states, and zip codes. What you need to do is know how to do the memorization of these things in a very short time. Remember, this is a timed test. For example, for the Address Checking part, you need to answer 60 questions in 11 minutes; for the Coding section of the test, you are to answer 36 questions in 6 minutes. On the actual Memory section test, you have to answer 36 questions in seven minutes. Our strategies for memorizing codes and street names will be useful to you.

Part A: Address Checking

Part A of Post Office Test 473 involves 60 questions to be finished in 11 minutes, comparing two rows of addresses as quickly as possible. You have to match the Corrected List (left column) of addresses containing numbers, names of streets, city, and state and Zip code, and the List to be Checked containing the same items. You must identify in comparing the left and right rows of addresses and Zip codes, if there are No Errors, if there Errors in the Address Only, Errors in the ZIP Code Only, or Errors in Both the address and the Zip codes.

Address Checking Sample Items

As mentioned on the previous page, you must determine if there are errors in the rows of addresses and zip codes being compared. If there are no errors in both the addresses and zip codes, meaning they are exactly the same, the answer should be A (No Errors); if there are errors in the address only, the answer should be B (Address Only); if there are errors in the ZIP code only, the answer should be C (ZIP Code only); and if there are errors in both address and the zip code, the answer should be D (Both).
